How I Cured My Candida

One Woman's Story How She Beat Candida Yeast Infection

Green Super Smoothie For Health

The other day I was watching a video made by Leisa from Embracing Health. She was making a green smoothie with lots of super foods. She inspired me so much that today I had to make one of those for my breakfast!

My Green Smoothie Breakfast

Ingredients:

Big punch spinach leaves
1 small banana
1 C frozen raspberries
1 Tbs Chia seeds
2 tsp Maca powder
1 tsp raw Cacao
1 Tbs Coconut oil
Big glass of water

Mix all these ingredients in a blender, adjust water to wanted thickness, and voila – the perfect nutritious green smoothie full of vitamins, minerals, protein and good fats. Delicious!
This makes about 750 ml and I actually added a tiny bit of stevia into my second glass to get more sweetness to it.

With Candida it is best to leave banana out and add more berries and stevia. My Candida is in control at the moment so I thought that I’ll have my first banana in 6 months today. And it was good!

Here you can watch the Green Smoothie made by Leisa, maybe you’ll be inspired to make one too:

Lifestyle and Candida

Lifestyle Choices That Trigger Candida

We already know that there are many causes for yeast overgrowth and Candida, such as built up toxins in the body, diet of refined foods, sugars and nutrient deficient white flour and processed meats. Also loss of good bacteria and genetic tendencies may trigger Candida. But there are still other factors that may aggravate yeast infections. These I call Lifestyle Choices.

Ninth Step: Lifestyle Choices

Lifestyle choices don’t usually cause Candida by themselves but they can definitely add to the mix of triggers causing yeast overgrowth. These triggers include lack of exercise, insomnia or lack of sleep, stress, bad hygiene and even unprotected or increased sexual activity.

The following lifestyle choices will help fighting against Candida:

  1. Exercising regularly improves digestion and helps the body
    to remove toxins quickly.
  2. Good sleeping patterns and adequate sleep speed up
    the toxic elimination process.
  3. Reducing stress with relaxation techniques such as
    meditation and breathing exercises.
  4. Practicing good hygiene and using non-toxic shampoos,
    soaps and  washing detergents.
  5. Using protection when having sex, washing up afterwards
    and changing bed sheets often.

I’ll be talking about these lifestyle choices in more detail in future posts.

Full recommendations and a very helpful Sleep Optimization Plan can be read from Linda Allen’s comprehensive book: “Yeast Infection No More”.

Naturopath Remedies For Leaky Gut Syndrome

Going to the Naturopath for Advice on Leaky Gut

After I learned that I had Leaky Gut Syndrome as well as Candida I asked some guidance from my naturopath. He told me that the first thing I need to do is get my digestion working properly, getting regular and adding a few kilos since my weight had dropped too much with the candida diet.

He advised me to eat more meat since I am O+ blood type. I know it goes a bit against the acid/alkaline diet with meat causing acids to build up but I guess eating enough green leafy vegetables counteracts this sufficiently. At least I agree that I do need to gain some weight again.

My Naturopath Gave Me These Supplements

These are the supplements my naturopath gave me to boost my digestion:
* DigestRegulation
Ingredients: Inulin, Flaxseed, Soy Fibre, L-glutamine, Ginger, Slippery Elm    Bark, Dandelion, Mixed Carotenes, Bifidus, Lactobacilus Acidophilus and Glucosamine Hydrocloride.
This should also help with my getting regular because it has the slippery elm!

* D.E.F. Digestive Enzyme Formula
Ingredients: Pancreatin (that is equivalent to Protease, Lipase and Amylase)
and Bromelains and Trypsin.
This supplement contains glucose – I hope it will not feed Candida!

* Magnesium Citrate Alkali
This is a supplement with vitamins and minerals, containing all vitamin B’s, A, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, selenium and iodine plus others.

This is the path that I’ve now taken to heal the leaky gut syndrome. Next visit to the naturopath, who is also an acupuncturist, is going to include acupuncture to speed up the healing and my digestion.

Leaky Gut Syndrome Shown In Live Blood Analysis

Leaky Gut Syndrome Visible In Live Blood Screening

I had a live blood analysis done after I learned of the possibility that I have the Leaky Gut Syndrome. It was an easy test; just one drop of blood from my fingertip put under a microscope and the Hemaview program showed my red and white blood cells moving on the computer screen.

Here is the proof of Leaky Gut shown on Hemaview screen:

Leaky Gut Syndrome Shown in Live Blood Analysis

Here is the interpretation of this screen: “Platelets are small particles within the blood that are responsible for the clotting process. When observed via Hemaview, platelets can produce vesicles (bubbles) containing inflammatory chemicals. This can be a sign of prolonged low-level immune activation, often as a result of “leaky gut syndrome”.

What is Leaky Gut Syndrome?

Leaky Gut Syndrome is a chronic condition that is often undiagnosed by doctors mainly because mainstream medical profession do not acknowledge that the condition exits. Still it is a surprisingly common problem. Leaky gut gets its name from the fact that molecules of food and toxins leak through the lining of the digestive tract because the pores in the lining open too much. This is also called hyperpermeability. These leaked toxins are then absorbed into the bloodstream and on to the liver. This may affect systems throughout the body causing inflammation in joints, skin disorders, triggering allergies, brain fog and hyperactivity, fatigue, abdominal pain, diarrhea, even fevers.

Managing Leaky Gut – hyperpermeability – is preventive medicine. It is not an illness but a condition that may lead to serious illnesses, such as arthritis, chronic fatigue, eczema, food allergies, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Joint problems, malnutrition, liver problems, psoriasis and even symtoms resembling autism and schizophrenia.

I definitely want to heal my digestive tract, leaky gut and candida. Soon I am seeing a naturopath/homeopath who will help me choose the right herbs and supplements to start absorbing all the nutrients in my food and vitamins which is my problem at the moment. Until then I’ll keep following the candida diet which is very similar to the diet for healing the leaky gut syndrome.

Testing For Candida Again

Second Candida Test After 4 Months

I have been on the strict Candida diet for 4 months exactly and taken all the supplements I was instructed to take. Now I am feeling good, the only thing that keeps persisting is my coated tongue. This is why I have a feeling my Candida is not totally cured yet. Therefore I am going to take the blood test called Candia5 from my finger.

Candia5 Test – Second Time

Here is the result of my Candia5 test this time. Have a look:

Testing For Candida Again

This result was a bit confusing to me, since positive result is supposed to have 2 lines, one at C and one at T. But the line at T is so thin and pale that I was not sure what it means. So I emailed the manufacturer of the test kit and a naturopath asking for their expert advice.

Here’s what the manufacturer says about the result:

“By looking at the photo, there is a very strong C line and this indicates that the test itself is valid.

“T” line (Test line) line intensity depends on the amount of antibody captured from the blood sample, increase in antibody amount will increase the line intensity and vice versa.

A weak T line showed on the photo indicates that there is a small amount of anti-candida antibody present in the blood that caused a weak or faded red line on the test kit. Therefore, it is a positive test result. ” (Eric Lin, Pathway Biomed)

This is exactly what I thought and was afraid of! Let’s see what the naturopath said:

“It looks like a definite positive result. Although being very faint, the extent of the candida would be fairly low but not altogether absent. The candida diet would be recommended for another 2-3 months. I would also be suspicious of leaky gut syndrome whereby the integrity of your gut wall has been compromised. This would explain why the infection hasn’t completely disappeared even after such discipline with the diet.” (Angela French from Health & Wellness Australia)

There you go. Leaky gut syndrome - that is one of the symptoms that may happen when you have Candida for a longer time. Basically it means that the lining of the digestive tract has been compromised so that its pores, that normally open only for the nutrients to be absorbed from food,  open too wide so that larger food particles and toxins from the gut can flood into the bloodstream.

Now this is the next level of digestive problems and I am going to have to see a specialist to help me heal. I’ll keep you posted! I am going to beat this.

Probiotics With Candida Diet

Eighth Step: Add Friendly Bacteria with Probiotics

Probiotics With Candida DietThis is the time to add good bacteria into my system. I have learned to eat  nutritious meals with foods that are allowed on  Candida Diet, cleansed my intestines and  I have killed Candida overgrowth with anti-fungals.

Now I will begin taking a good probiotic to establish my bowels with friendly intestinal flora. This will keep parasites and Candida away.  The right probiotic supplement has to contain large quantities of lacto bifidus and acidophilus.

It is essential to have the right slightly alkaline pH level in the colon, because if the environment is too acidic the friendly bacteria will be killed and the probiotic will have no effect. So I am still eating lots of alkaline foods.

Prebiotics – What is that?

Prebiotics are food for Probiotics. The more you nourish the probiotics in your gut, the better they will survive and grow, and  the healthier your immune system will be. Prebiotics help probiotics survive the journey through stomach acids to the intestines where they are needed.

Good news is that it is easy to add prebiotics in to the system by eating prebiotic foods: tomatoes, garlic, onions, leeks, asparagus, herbs and green tea.

All this and a lot more helpful information about how to cure yeast infection and Candida is in the book called ‘Yeast Infection No More’ by Linda Allen. I recommend this book, it saved me so much time and money and helped me on my way to get healthy again. It actually helped me to keep calm and focused in this stream of contradicting information about the Candida Diet.

Re-introducing Foods After Candida Diet

After a strict Candida diet for around 12 to 16 weeks it is finally time for me to introduce some foods back into my diet. What a relief! It is good to do it carefully and re-introduce only one food item at a time, so that if it will cause any symptoms I will know what caused it.

Foods I have re-introduced

I have already started having an apple or blueberries in the morning. I have successfully, meaning no adverse symptoms, eaten carrot, sweet potato / yams, cottage cheese, tofu and cured salmon. I also must admit that I have devoured some ‘natural’ chocolate, sweetened with stevia but it also contains polydextrose, which I suppose I shouldn’t be eating. I haven’t gotten any symptoms from these foods, so I assume they are ok. I will be adding more foods to my diet regularly and keep my fingers crossed that no Candida symptoms will appear.

Persisting Symptoms

My tongue has still a slight grey coating and if I have eaten almonds it is worse and white. That may be just almonds stuck on my tongue but anyway it is annoying. I don’t know how I can get rid of this tongue coating! It is a constant reminder of the Candida which should be pretty much cured by now. I know I won’t be fully yeast free since all people have yeast inside them, but being stable and not having any over-growth of yeast for life is my goal.

Foods to Avoid Permanently

Therefore re-introducing foods has to be done carefully without returning to the pre-Candida diet with refined foods, sugars and processed foods full of preservatives. I will still avoid all those to my best ability, eat non-gluten grains, which I have grown to love actually. Chia seeds are my nutritious friend!

It is also good to avoid the fruit with most sugar; mangoes, grapes, bananas, melons. Healthy diet with lots of vegetables will be the rule for me and keeping track of my pH level. It is too easy to slip into old habits, easy to eat ready made foods, but I know that Candida returns very easily and that is something that I do not want!

Curing Candida – One Last Supplement

Last Supplement in Curing Candida – Candigest Plus

I am in the last phase of killing Candida. I took the anti-fungals – Olive leaf extract and Oil of oregano – each for 2 weeks and had a 2 week break after each.  Now I am taking the last Candida killing supplement called Candigest Plus. Hopefully this will be the end of Candida outbreak for me! I will be taking a Candida test soon after this 30 day course of Candigest is over.

Candigest Plus

Candigest Plus is an extremely potent supplement. It has cellulase enzymes that digest the cellulose in Candida and kill the yeast. And what’s great about it too, it causes no die-off symptoms because it contains no anti-fungals! Candigest Plus also contains an enzyme called protease that will digest the interior cell of Candida as well. This supplement should get rid of most systemic yeast infections and its symptoms in 30 days. Some people may need to take it for 2 months but I hope I am not one of them! The instructions mention that Candigest Plus should not be taken by people with Inflammatory Bowel Disease such as Crohn’s or Ulcerative Colitis.

I am taking 2 capsules in the morning an hour before breakfast and then another 2 at night just before going to sleep, at least 2 hours after eating. I don’t have any die-off symptoms as the product promises. Actually I feel pretty good.

About Food and Diet

Curing Candida – One Last Supplement

After 14 weeks of candida diet I am at the stage where I am anxious to start adding more foods to my diet. I have been very strict about sugar, wheat and gluten, dairy, fruit and even starchy vegetables and I really would love to start eating some of those foods again. Mostly fruit, all vegetables and some dairy such as cottage cheese! I don’t think sugar will be on my list of foods to eat anytime soon. I don’t even miss it, but some natural alternatives like honey and agave syrup would be nice to add into some dishes. I am diligently avoiding all preservatives and additives. This means that I have basically made or cooked everything I eat from scratch. It takes time and effort but I have learned to eat so much tastier food with ingredients that were previously unknown to me.

I have learned about raw food, vegan food and acid-alkaline diets. All very interesting and beneficial to add to one’s eating routine. You don’t have to become a full blown raw foodist or veganist to benefit from those kind of foods by substituting some meals with raw or vegetarian foods.

Alkaline Food Diet

Alkaline Diet Principles

Alkaline diet helps to get a body pH balance to healthy levels. There are several principles in maintaining alkaline diet and it may sound complex or difficult to keep but it pays off with a healthy body. Many health conditions and symptoms disappear when acidifying foods are replaced with alkalizing foods.

Try to introduce these Alkaline Diet Principles to your eating plan:

  1. Eat at least 70% of daily food from alkalizing food groups. The rest should be high protein foods  and other acid forming foods.
  2. Eat at least 2 servings of fruit and 5 servings of vegetables per day.
  3. Eat fruit in the morning, 30 minutes before breakfast.
  4. Don’t over eat. Stop eating on the first feeling of fullness.
  5. Don’t drink any fluids at meals. Drink at least 15 – 30minutes before your meal and then it would be beneficial to wait for 45 minutes after meal before drinking again.  This includes water, juices, soups and soda, tea, wine (last 3 you shouldn’t be drinking at all). Fluids dilute the digestive process making it more difficult for foods to be properly digested.
  6. Meat, eggs and dairy are acidifying foods;  eat them sparingly.
  7.  Don’t eat hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils. These include margarine, butter. Foods to avoid: fast food, cereals, cookies, crackers, vegetable shortenings, candies, processed foods.
  8. You still need fats. Use the following fats instead to get real nutritional value: avocados, nuts and seeds, coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, flax seed oil. See food chart for more.
  9. Don’t use table salt. Use unrefined sea salt instead and reduce the intake of salt over all.
  10. Don’t use sugar or artificial sweeteners. sugar increases the acidity level in our body.  Use natural sweetener such as stevia when you want to eat something sweet.
  11. Don’t drink caffeinated drinks: coffee, black tea, coke etc.
  12. Drink a lot of water, at least 2 litres per day. Remember it should be filtered water. Alkaline water is also available! Good tip is to squeeze a bit of lemon or lime into your water.
  13. Use whole grains such as quinoa, millet, buckwheat or sprouted grains instead of white flour. Also swap white rice for brown rice even though it is also slightly acidic but a lot more nutritional than white rice.

Alkaline Food Diet

Importance of pH Balance in Curing Candida

What is a Healthy pH Balance?

The acidity or alkalinity of a solution is described by its pH, potential of hydrogen. It is measured on a scale from 0 – 14. The lower the pH of a solution is the more acidic it is. Higher pH is more alkaline and pH of 7 is neutral, neither acidic nor alkaline.

Importance of pH Balance in Curing Candida

People who have unbalanced pH have usually acidic body fluids and tissues. It is much more common to be overly acidic than alkaline. This is because we eat too much sugary foods, meat and dairy products that are all acidic foods and too little fruit and vegetables which are more alkaline. Healthy body has usually a pH range from 6.5 – 7.5. Some say even that when our internal chemistry is slightly alkaline, 7.0 – 8.0,  it actually functions at its best.*

When a body is too acidic it has to borrow minerals such as magnesium, potassium, sodium and calcium from vital organs and bones to neutralize the acid and remove it from the body. This results in those organs being damaged. This may lead to complications, infections and specifically yeast infection. Candida grows easily in an acid environment.

pH Strips to Test Your Acid Alkaline Balance

Using a simple test at home can give you an idea of how acidic or alkaline your body is. There are many kinds of pH stripsImportance of pH Balance in Curing Candida for sale in health stores. It is a good idea to have one in your medicine cabinet and test yourself regularly. I have a roll of pH strip paper as in this picture.

It is very easy to use pH strips. The test can be done from saliva or urine.
Test from saliva is done by gathering fresh saliva into a plastic spoon and dipping a piece of testing strip into it. The color will change from yellow to any of those shown on the packet. Compare the result with the picture to determine the pH balance.
Optimal pH for saliva is above 7 pH.  If saliva pH is consistently lower than 6.8,  it indicates possible insufficient alkaline reserves.

The pH test from urine can provide a fairly accurate picture of body chemistry, because it tests what the body is eliminating after kidneys filtering system. It is usually lower than pH taken from saliva. The ideal range for urine pH is 6.5 to 7.0+

The lower your pH value below 7.0, the greater your degree of acid stress.

A pH balanced diet is a vital key to health maintenance, according to many experts. I’ll be talking about Alkaline Diet in my next post.
